MATH

I look forward to a fun and exciting year with this year's Purple Team.  I am anxious to post the latest news about our team on this page.

Check often to see What's New!

We will be having several guests visit our classroom throughout the year.

Do you know anyone who could visit our classroom and tell us about his/her job and how they use math??? Let me know!!

Class Guests:

We had some guests visit our class this year!

  • Amanda visited from WPI (Worceser Polytechnic Institute) to talk about civil engineering and bridges.  She was able to challenge the class with an engineering problem!

  • Mrs. Fortin (Sean J.'s mom) talked about her career as an architect and showed us examples of different types of structures.  She then helped students solve a problem to find the area of a deck and a roof and what it would cost to build.

  • Erica & Megan taught students orgami by creating paper cranes during the last day of math classes.

"Pi Activities":

In honor of Pi Day (3/14), we have done some special activites in math and on the Purple Team.  Each class competed to see who in each class could memorize the most digits of Pi.  The results are below.  Also, the top winner(s) on the team will get the privilege of giving Mr. Schaffnit a pie in the face!!  Congrats Grace and Shreyas!!

A block:  Tyler (20 digits),   Sarah (15 digits)

C block:  Lily (33 digits),  Kelsey (31 digits)

G block:  Rose (81 digits),  Morgan & Mitchell (28 digits)

H block:  Jason (23 digits),  Abby (27 digits),  Olivia (33 digits)

I block:  Nora (51 digits),  Grace (102 digits),  Shreyas (102 digits)

"News from Last Year":

In math, students have created their "Farewell Quilt" by transforming a shape and then making tessellations.  Each student has created a piece which will be a piece of the quilt.  These quilts will then become the "Welcome Quilt" for next year's 7th grade class.  See an example of an M.C. Escher tessellation to the right.

The Purple Team celebrated Pi Day with doing a circle discovery activity to find out where Pi comes from, making a Pi clip and memorizing the digits of Pi.  The winners from each class are:

Block A:  Jessa M.  -  21 digits

Block C:  Olivia B.  -  19 digits

Block G:  Lauren N.  -  57 digits

Block H:  Steven F.  -  61 digits

Block I:  Dan R.  -  82 digits

Being the top winner on the team, Dan has the honor of giving Mr. Schaffnit a pie in the face!!  And this will happen on April Fool's day!!!!!!!

"Classroom Guests":

SEE YOU AGAIN SOON!
